2. Protein
Protein is the best agent, no harming effect. Indeed, it repairs the
damaged cells, tissues and muscles in human body and helps the development
process. But food with high protein often comes with high fat also,
for example red meat. Therefore you must be careful in choosing your
sources of protein. Protein is mostly found in red meat, poultry,
fish and milk.
3. Fat
Diabetic patients are mostly overweight. So the less fat intake is
always better. There are two kinds of fat, the healthy monounsaturated
fat, and the unhealthy saturated and trans fats.
The healthy monounsaturated fat is mostly found in olive oil, avocado,
nuts, and dark chocolate.
Unhealthy fats, such as saturated fat is mostly found in animal products
- red meat, milk, cheese, pastries, coking oil, etc. and trans fat
(the processed fat) is mostly found in processed food (canned, boxed,
packaged, etc.).
4. Fiber
Fiber is also an excellent agent after protein with no harms. Indeed,
fiber is needed in large amount for type 2 diabetes diet because it
can help the digestion process which makes you feel full for longer
period, and it prevents the blood to absorb the glucose all at once.
Fiber mostly found in fruits and vegetables, also in whole wheat,
grains, beans and brown rice.
5. Salt
Diabetes can lead to hypertension. Therefore you should limit the
daily salt intake. You can avoid too much salt intake by cooking your
own food with fresh ingredients. Do not eat processed (canned, pickled,
etc.) food and avoid too much ketchup, mustard, salad dressing, artificial
spices and MSG (Monosodium Glutamate).
You should also check on the food labels for nutrition facts if you
are going to shop for your food. Beside the knowledge of carbohydrate,
protein, fat and fiber, you should also mind the portion of each meal
serving. Eating small portions frequently is better than large portion
at once. Three to four meals with one to two snacks daily are best
